GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

NOVEMBER 16, 2006

 

Meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM.

President Lisa Guerrero gave the invocation: My Prayer of Thanks by Rebecca Batts Buttler

Attendance: Heather Adair, Samantha Antonelli, Shea Bryson, Mia De la Garza, Debbie Dunkin, Sandra Flinn, Cristina Gil, Lisa Guerrero, Melanie Haraway, Heather Helmer, Natalie Leal, Paige Matlock, Kathleen McLelland, Courtney Nash, Caroline Pitts, Stacey Rowe, Parker Spees, Susan Wieboldt, Chris White, Francis Wong, Kimberley Young.

Minutes from the October Meeting were approved.

Education Training- Teri was not in attendance, no ice breaker was done.

Presidents Report:

  • President Elect Position Michele Robinson has resigned as President-Elect. Procedure was followed according to by-laws to find a replacement candidate. Stacey Rowe will take on this position.
  • Office Lease- Lease agreement with Fireman's Union has been approved, the agreement has been drawn up, and will be available for anyone wishing to review it. It is awaiting signatures.

AJLI Training Update: AJLI is holding a training session in Las Vegas in February. Stacey Rowe will attend. There are funds available for a second person to accompany her. Anyone interested in a future executive board position wanting to attend should contact Lisa.

Committee Updates:

  • Cookbook Lisa Hutchens sent an email with an update of the number of books sold and amount deposited from the Birding Festival. The top selling team for the weekend were Mia De La Garza and heather Helmer. They will be treated to a manicure and pedicure.
  • Courtesy- Lisa Guerrero updated everyone on the current medical status of Melody Swinnea. It was approved for the executive board to donate an amount to her husband from the contingency fund to help cover their expenses. A sympathy card was sent to Luz Cintron on the death of her father. A Card was sent to Lisa Cherrington congratulating her on the birth of a baby boy.
  • Nominating- Due to some resignations, there are several vacancies on the committee which will be filled at the January meeting.
  • Placement- Courtney requested everyone to do a status update with her after the meeting to make sure they are on track. Upcoming make-up option: Clenaing out the area being leased by the Fireman's Union before they move in. Please contact Courtney or Lisa if interested.
  • Project Committee- The top three choices selected by the membership were: Sunny Glen, AJLI Extreme Make Over, and Boys and Girls Club. The committee will research all three options to determine costs, manpower, etc.
  • Arrangements- No report
  • Charity Event- Corporate Donations: Sponsorship Packets are being worked on. Save the Date cards for the Senioritas on the Bay Tournament will be going out in January.
  • Community Liaison- Kathy Preddy has requested to speak to the membership about RioFest at the January meeting.
  • Done in a Day- No further news on the RMH Shower, Tina Buford not in attendance.
  • Member at large- No report to give.
  • Advisory Planning/Bylaws- Kathleen McLelland reviewed the bylaws changes proposed at our last general meeting. After a brief discussion, the bylaws changes were approved. Kathleen will update the League Computer to show the changes for next years yearbook.
  • Membership Development- The Provisional Class will be decorating the Ronald McDonald House for Christmas on the 27th at 6:00 PM. All are invited to come help out. The class has finished their Valley Baptist Training and will begin volunteer work in the Children's Wing.
  • Public Relations- Plans for the Chamber Mixer to showcase the Junior League and its Community partners, the 10th anniversary of Rio Riches, and the Fishing Tournament are progressing. Save the date: February 8th 5:30-8:00 at the Harlingen Country Club. We still need sponsors for this event to cover costs.
  • Sustainers- The Sustainers held a Potluck Luncheon. They all expressed their willingness to help in any of our projects, just ask! They will be decorating a tree for display at the Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum Tree Extravaganza to highlight the Junior League theme for this year, and the fishing tournament. The Holiday Coffee will be December 14th from 4-6 PM at the home of sustainer Charlotte Dahm.

 

Other Business- Francis Wong presented to the membership a volunteer opportunity to help with the VBMC Memory Box Project. These are boxes given to families who have lost a child during the birthing process. Members are invited to meet at the Golden Palms Craft Room any Saturday (except holidays) between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM.
