Junior League of Harlingen, Inc.

General Membership Meeting Minutes

September 21, 2006

·         Meeting was called to order at 6:33 p.m. by President, Lisa Guerrero.

·         Darcy McCabe led the League during the Invocation.

·         Education Training Chair, Teri Funk, instructed members in a “get to know you (again)” activity.

·         During the President’s Report on September Board Meeting, Lisa mentioned a possible co-occupancy opportunity in the JLH office with a local non-profit organization.  Details will be forthcoming.

·         Committee Reports:

o        Advisory Planning/ByLaws – Updates to the ByLaws are in process and will be presented to the Board at an upcoming meeting.

o        Arrangements – Beginning with the October meeting, the General Membership Meeting will be held at the Harlingen Country Club.  For $10 per year per member, HCC will set up the room and provide light snacks and beverages.

o        Community Liaison – Debbie Dunkin and Lisa Guerrero met with RioFest, providing an opportunity to clarify common ground.  In Debbie’s absence, Lisa provided a synopsis of JLH’s historical involvement in RioFest.  JLH seeks to remain in a positive role with RioFest – it is the League’s legacy and will always be part of JLH.  The League’s name will forthwith be listed as “founder”, instead of the current “co-sponsor” headline on all RioFest media (letterhead, advertisements, brochures, etc.).  JLH is not needed as a volunteer force this year but out support is needed to boost participation and attendance.

o        Cookbook / Ways & Means – (1) This year marks the 10th anniversary of Rio Riches with only 1000 copies remaining.  In the next eight months we will strive to sell all remaining books and support our ultimate goal: helping the community.  Challenge:  the person or team of persons that sells the most cookbooks by fiscal year-end will choose which school or 503(c) charity receives the proceeds.  Check will be presented at the May Annual Meeting/Luncheon.  (2)  February 8, 2007 is the Business After Hours Chamber Mixer.  It will be a first-time joint effort with the Harlingen Chamber, San Benito Chamber, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  This will be a wonderful networking opportunity with visibility for the League, showcasing our charities/partners and promoting Rio Riches and the fishing tournament.  The Chamber will mail 1600 invites of our design and the HCC chef will prepare selections from Rio Riches.  Will be raffling a wall of wine, similar to last year’s charity event and may need donations.  A corporate underwriter is needed to help cover the expenses of the event since the League is the host.  Also, League ambassadors will be needed to attend the event and promote League.
(3) Birding Festival – November 9-12.  The number one tourist event in Harlingen and 3rd largest birding festival in the country!  Our attendance increases visibility.  We will again make goodies from Rio Riches and sell artist-autographed copies of the cookbook.  Need volunteers:  bakers and table reps.  Contact Lisa to sign-up.

o        Done in a Day – Lisa Guerrero mentioned that the House Shower is in the works and a date will be announced soon.

o        Member at Large – Contact Heather Helmer with questions or concerns and she will present them before the Board.

o        Membership Development – The Provisionals had a great first meeting and have changed their meetings to the fourth Tuesday of the month.

o        Project Committee – Mia is currently researching possibilities.

o        Rio Review – The Rio Review continues to be sent to the printer the Monday following the General Membership Meeting.  Be sure to contact Darcy McCabe with any insertions well in advance.  The question was raised about including / soliciting ads to help defray printing expenses.  Darcy will research pricing options and will present the findings to the Board.

o        Webmaster – Ginger Armstrong asked that committee chairpersons send events and information to her for posting.  Soon the calendar will be available to post committee dates by chairpersons directly.

·         AJLI Training Dates – October 19-21 President/President-Elect Fall Leadership Meeting in Memphis.  November 3-5 ODI (Organizational Development Institute) in Houston.  Members that might be interested in attending ODI should email Lisa Guerrero at lisamg84@msn.com.

·         September Events:

o        October 9th – Executive Board and Board Meetings at Lisa’s home

o        October 19th – General Membership Meeting @ HCC

o        October 19th–21st Fall Leadership Training, Memphis

o        October 24th – Provisional Meeting

o        November 3rd–5th – ODI Training, Houston
